  • American Experience: Three Mile Island Meltdown  (original PBS broadcast 1999) Well-told account of the worst US nuclear accident, gripping nail biter even when one knows how it ends. Erie County connection: In the early 1970s, Penelec was looking into building ten nuclear plants and ten coal plants in western Erie County. After much local opposition*, that project was abandoned, though Penelec went in on the construction of Unit 2 Reactor at TMI, which was the one that melted down. *The robust local opposition deserves its inspiring own story!
  • Event photo album: 5th Anniversary of War In Iraq Event held March 9, 2008, organized by Erie Peace Initiative. It was going to be a pretty ambitious event, but a monster storm hit the night before, paralyzing the area; orqanizers held the event anyway, in a smaller, more simplified version. The members of Meadville's Women in Black and Veterans for Peace didn't let the snow stop them, and joined us for the event. Candidates for then-3rd Congressional District were invited to answer questions about the war; all five Democrats attended, Republican Phil English did not attend. The Ribbon Project made its debut at this event; Travis Lindsey, a member of Iraq Vets Against the War, had encouraged the Ribbon Project which would feature the names of US Iraq War fallen. The march went from Perry Square and ended up in Cauley Auditorium on West 4th Street. Pizza, refreshments and socializing followed.  Local media were able to get to the event and cover it. Below are a couple photos from the album.
