Oct 3 – Harry Chapin: A Family Celebration Reg Lenna Center for the Arts, Jamestown NY. “Harry Chapin: A Family Celebration, will unite the late singer-songwriter’s brother, nieces and touring bandmates in a concert that has been three decades in the making. …In a June 1981 concert (the first live show on the then ‘Palace’ stage in 25 years), Harry Chapin performed on a decrepit stage under a leaky roof to an enthusiastic and umbrella-carrying audience. Before the end of the show, Chapin pledged to return to Jamestown for a fundraiser if the community committed to restoring the theater. Harry Chapin was tragically killed in an auto accident a month later, but the movement had already begun. In less than ten years, the Palace had been restored to its former glory and re-christened, The Reg Lenna Civic Center.”

Oct 14 – “Walking to Listen: 4,000 Miles Across America on Foot.” Mercyhurst Walker Recital Hall, 7:30pm, free and open to public. Andrew Forsthoefel’s journey. Collaborating with Transom.org, he co-produced a radio documentary about his experience that was featured on the NPR radio show This American Life. Forstheofel, who plans to publish a book about the trip in 2016, will speak as part of Mercyhurst’s yearlong series of events on the theme of “Confronting Injustice.”

Oct 26 – Maria Langer Film Series: “Fly by Light” Mercyhurst,Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center. A group of teenagers board a bus for West Virginia, leaving the streets of Washington, D.C., to participate in an ambitious peace education program. For the first time in their lives, Mark, Asha, Martha and Corey play in mountain streams, sing under the stars, and confront the entrenched abuse, violence and neglect cycles of their past. But as they return to D.C., each young person faces an unforgiving series of hurdles and roadblocks that challenge their efforts to build a better life. The filmmaker will be present for a discussion following the screening.

Dec 9-16 – Dramashop Staged Reading Series: “Clybourne Park” Winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize and the 2012 Tony Award, features two intriguing acts set in the same house, but fifty years apart. Act One takes place in 1959, as neighbors are trying to stop an African-American family from moving to their quiet, suburban street. Act Two is present-day, and the now predominantly African-American neighborhood battles to hold its ground in the face of gentrification. Funny, witty, challenging and timely, it’s a perfect fit for Dramashop.
