Aug 26-28 - 'TOWN SHRINK" "Columbia University professor of psychiatry, Dr. Mindy Thompson Fullilove, will visit Erie in August to discuss how urban design decisions can increase or reduce violence, and harm or help community and minority health. Her keynote talk will be Thursday evening, August 27 at Booker T Washington Center. She will also be meeting with small groups Aug. 26-28. Aug 30 - Free Movie Night - "DEAR GOVERNOR CUOMO" Erie Movie House, 3424 W Lake Rd, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm (75 min.) Hosted by Our Water, Our Rights "This is a concert-protest film aimed at influencing New York State's decision to ban hydraulic fracturing. Featuring activist/entertainers including Mark Ruffalo, Natalie Merchant, Pete Seeger, Citizen Cope and scientists like Sandra Steingraber, the film lays out the science and facts behind the decision. Though focused on the issue in New York, the education and incredible protest music are relevant in Pennsylvania and the other 33 states that already allow fracking. Also showing preview trailer for the upcoming film: Dear President Obama. This free event will be followed by refreshments and a group discussion about working towards a moratorium on fracking in NW PA, and possibly a ban on further fracking in the entire State. Sep 9 - AN EVENING WITH THE CREATORS OF "INVISIBLE THREAD" Mercyhurst Universit, Mary D'Angelo Performing Arts Center, Erie PA 7:30pm. Original name: "Witness Uganda" "Griffin, a black American volunteer, arrives in Uganda from New York City to help build a school and escape his church’s probing into his sexuality. But when he meets a group of destitute, orphaned teenagers, he becomes obsessed with a mission that will change his and their lives forever. Fresh off a workshop at Disney hosted by music theatre legend Steven Schwartz, the score from this two-time winner of the Richard Rogers Award for Musical Theater will come alive in Erie for one night only. Invisible Thread is the story of a man battling to find his place in a world full of injustice as he asks “is changing the world even possible?”"
Sep 11-12 - ZEN BUDDHIST MONK CLAUSE ANSHIN THOMAS: "WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO WAKE UP?" Allegheny College, Meadville PA. Zen Buddhist monk, Vietnam War veteran and Meadville native Claude AnShin Thomas will present a talk and workshop – to kick off a 30-Day Mindfulness Challenge at Allegheny College. BBoth the talk, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11 in the Tillotson Room of the Tippie Alumni Center, and the workshop are open to the public. The workshop will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12 in Schultz East Alcove. Thomas trained with Thich Nhat Hanh, the Vietnamese Zen master, and is the author of the book "At Hell’s Gate: A Soldier’s Journey from War to Peace." He also founded the Zaltho Foundation, a spiritually based nonprofit committed to ending violence by promoting mindfulness and positive change within individuals.

Sep 26 - ON THE MOVE (Tentative plans; updates/details shortly) Members of Benedictines for Peace will host an event celebrating the environment, peace, hope and opportunity, and environmental safety on Saturday, September 26, from 1 – 3 p.m. The goal of this event is to bring greater awareness to the reality that, together, we can create a more sustainable, nonviolent world for current and future generations. The theme of the celebration is On the Move …. Four groups will assemble at four different venues, marching from the North, South, East, and West and converging on Griswold Plaza, 14th and Peach Streets, where a program will be presented. The parade coming from the North will carry signs focusing on the Environment. Marchers proceeding from the South will draw attention to Environmental Safety. Those processing from the East will raise the issues of Hope and Opportunity; while those coming from the West will call for Peace.Note: In case of rain, activities will move inside at the Brewerie Restaurant.For further information about the event, please email Janice Etchison: jetchison17@gmail.com.
